  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 11-5-2011

'Twas the day of the Sneak Peek and all through the mall; not a creature was stirring; not even a pig. What started off as a quiet day, soon turned into the usual Sneak Peek madhouse of players hoping like hell to get the bunny in a Sneak Peek pack. Some were rewarded. Many left with no bunny.

Regarding the weekly constructed tournament also held on this day, 48 participants enrolled then engaged in ferocious dueling. After 6 arduous rounds, the following 8 players emerged to battle for first place honors:

    1. Tyler "Not my cup of tea" T. - Junk Dopple
    2. Joey "No Tell" C. - Gallis Burn
    3. Kyle "The Black Rose Sucked" W. - Fabled
    4. Aaron "Drop and Give Me Ten" B. - Heroes
    5. Julio "Goes to Time Every Round" B. - X-Sabers
    6. Chris "Kawasaki" L. - Scraps
    7. Brett "Set my People Free" B. - Dark World
    8. Doug "Never Tell" S. - Destiny Hero Plant

Golly gee a lot of new players made the top 8 this week. How exhilarating! In the quarterfinals, Never Tell upset number 1 seed Not my cup of tea; Drop and give me ten defeated Goes to Time Every Round; The Black Rose Sucked won Kawasaki; and No Tell upended Set my People Free.

In the top 4, Never Tell defeated The Black Rose Sucked, and No tell defeated Drop and Give Me Ten.

In the finals, a fitting matchup between No Tell and Never Tell saw No Tell emerge victorious.

In only two weeks, on Saturday, November 19th, Game Den in WVC will be holding its much anticipated BETTER THAN REGIONALS tournament. See the post entititled "Better than Regionals tournament" for all of the delicious details.

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 10-1-2011

By popular demand, once again, yours truly brings you a Yu-gi-oh Tournament Report. I know there are many of you out there who find these reports to be the highlight of your entire week and many of you become more or less non functioning blobs until you read these reports, so I make every effort to give you an entertaining and yet concise weekly report--relatively concise given the length of this sentence.

October is here and though the thoughts of many turn to carving pumpkins into grotesque, leering monstrosities, others are playing Yu-gi-oh at noon on Saturday at Game Den. This past Saturday a robust turnout filled the sacred walls of Game Den in West Valley City. After six arduous rounds of extremely intense dueling, the following 8 emerged to participate in the bracket:

    1. Taylor "Worst Box Ever" B. - Gate Hero
    2. DJ "Hawaiian Chicken Leg" K. - T.G.
    3. Trevor "Nascar" V. - Malefic
    4. Cody "The Gavel" C. - Zombie Plant
    5. Zach "Bearded Wonder" P. - Lightsworn
    6. Cody "A Day Late but Not a Dollar Short" D. - Karakuri
    7. Daryl "Has Won" R. - Agents
    8. Chris "Kawasaki" L. - Dopple Dupe

In the Quarterfinals, The Hawaiian Chicken Leg defeated Has Won, Worst Box Ever defeated Kawasaki, The Gavel defeated Bearded Wonder, and Nascar defeated A Day Late But Not a Dollar Short. In the semi-finals, The Hawaiian Chicken Leg won Nascar and The Gavel won Worst Box Ever. In the finals, The Gavel gnawed The Hawaiian Chicken Leg to win the tournament

Now more details regarding the Better Than Regionals (BTR) tournament to be held at Game Den in WVC on Saturday, October 29th at noon. As previously stated, each person who enters the BTR tournament will receive 6 packs. These packs will likely be in the form of 2 Generation Force Special Editions--each special edition having 2 packs and even The Mathematician, Jordan V. can tell you 2 x 3 is 6. Also, on the day of the BTR tourament, Game Den in WVC will be having many super sales on popular Yu-gi-oh products such as Special Editions, Structure Decks, Gold Series 4, and Player's Choice sleeves. This will indeed be much better than Regionals. Another post giving all the details for the BTR tournament will appear on Gameden.com this week.

  • MTG Tournament 9-14-11

On Wednesday nights at 7:00 p.m. Game Den in West Valley City will be having "Weird Wednesday" MTG events. Every Wednesday night the format will change. Last week was a "pick your poison" draft where players chose any 3 packs and drafted.

This tournament was an M12 two-headed giant sealed event. Six teams battled it. Many of the teams were experienced MTG players, however the winning team was comprised of two young guns wearing dress shirts and ties, Clark H and Spencer B. won the tournament. I believe it was their first time ever playing two-headed giant. Next Wednesday night, September 21, Weird Wednesday format will be a Rise of Eldrazi draft.

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 9-17-11

Once upon a time a lil girl named Hacky June went on a picnic and played Yu-gi-oh. But that's a story for another day.

Today's story involves duels by gallant knights of Yu-gi-oh at Game Den in West Valley City. After much figurative bloodshed, the following 8 emerged victorious:

    1. Joey "Noodle" C. - TG Agents

    2. DJ "The Hawaiian Chicken Leg" K - Gravekeepers

    3. Doug "No tell winner" S. - Destiny Heroes

    4. Trevor "Nascar" V. - Malefic

    5. Kevin "Big Brother" G. - Blackwings

    6. Leo "Feely Fingers" N. - Battery Man

    7. Arman "Grabby Hands" F. - Agents

    8. Bright "Five Dolla!" L. - Dragunity

Is it a coincidence that "Feely Fingers" and "Grabby Hands" are friends? You be the judge.

In the Quarterfinals, "Five Dolla!" upset "Noodle," "The Hawaiian Chicken Leg" defeated "Grabby Hands," "No tell winner" won "Feely Fingers," and "Big Brother" overcame "Nascar."

In the Semifinals, "The Hawaiian Chicken Leg" won "No tell winner," and "Five Dolla! defeated "Big Brother." In the finals,"Five dolla! as the 8th seed won the tournament by gnawing "The Hawaiian Chicken Leg"

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 8-20-11

Game Den held yet another splendid Yu-gi-oh tournament. With chipmunk like chatter about the new banned list echoing off the walls, players engaged in mano a mano duels. Every bit of 44 people entered the tournament on this date, August 20, 2011. Eight emerged as the top finishers after 6 rounds of Swiss pairings:

    1. Anthony "19 rares in a row" E. - Super secret deck of ultimate doom and destruction

    2. Jacky "forgot to take my Ritalin" H. - T.G.

    3. Enoch "Shake my hand" S. - T.G.

    6. D.J. "Hawaiian Chicken Leg" K. - T.G.

    7. Taylor "Worst box ever" B. - Flamveil Hero

    8. Cameron "That one annoying kid" M - I don't know.

Now a brief message from yours truly regarding that one annoying kid. A long time ago, an employee of mine was talking to me about how it was to work on a Saturday and run the Yu-gi-oh tournament. He said, you know "that one annoying kid?" Let me assure you, it is almost impossible to pinpoint one annoying kid out of the kids who come to my store. Nevertheless, I quickly deduced he was talking about Cameron M. Therefor, Cameron M. is in fact "that one annoying kid." Anyone who wishes to appeal his nickname may do so, however, I do not promise to make changes to something more or less flattering as the case may be.

Now back to our regularly scheduled tournament program. In the top 8, Anthony E. defeated Cameron M., Brad Seltzer defeated Colby G., Jacky H. lucked out a win over Taylor B., and Enoch S. defeated D.J. K.

In the semi-finals, Anthony E. defeated Brad S. and Enoch S. squished Jacky H. just like grape.

    From the movie Karate Kid

    Miyagi: Now, ready?

    Daniel: Yeah, I guess so.

    Miyagi: [sighs] Daniel-san, must talk.

    [they both kneel]

Miyagi: Walk on road, hm? Walk left side, safe. Walk right side, safe. Walk middle, sooner or later
[makes squish gesture] get squish just like grape. Here, karate, same thing. Either you karate do "yes" or karate do "no." You karate do "guess so," [makes squish gesture] just like grape. Understand?

    Daniel: Yeah, I understand.

    Miyagi: Now, ready?

In the finals, Enoch S. defeated Anthony E., and a mad rush for turbo pack 6 ensued. Brad S. got the Dark Armed Dragon and Anthony E. got his nickname for the day.

Stay tuned for upcoming announcents about Game Den's next big event. This big event is tentatively scheduled for October 29th and is tentatively named "Better than Regionals Tournament".

    Daniel: Yeah, I'm ready.

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 8-6-2011

On the very day of the Generation Force Sneak Peek event, Game Den held its weekly, constructed Yu-gi-oh tournament. Even though many of the regular players were little girls and chose to not play, a robust 43 duelists entered this fine duelorama. With much excitement lingering in the air, six rounds of fierce competition left the following top 8 players:

    1. Arman F. - Agents
    2. Joey C. - Tour Guide Plants

    4. Edwin C. - GBs
    5. Robert M. - GBs
    6. Philipp H. - Windup
    7. Enoch "shake my hand" S. - T.G.

In the quarterfinals, Nathan J. defeated Philipp H, Edwin C. defeated Robert. M., Joey Chou defeated Enoch S., and in a cute duel between friends, Arman F. defeated Leo N.

In the semi-finals, Arman F. defeated Edwin C. and Joey C. defeated Nathan J. In the finals, Joey C. defeated Arman F.

Game Den is upset over not getting Regionals for the Generation Force season. Game Den calls on ALL of its loyal tournament players to let Konami know that game den is the BEST place for Regionals. Please find the link on Konami's site for telling them about Regionals and promote Game Den! If not, you'll end up driving to some *%$!hole for Regionals and sitting on the floor.

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament (the big free one) 7-30-2011

If you didn't enter this one, methinks you missed the best Yu-gi-oh tournament ever. Every seat was full -- all 128 of them. Players of all ability levels came from near and far to play for free and get prizes for free. Game Den's soon to be famous "Wall of Tins" was a big hit. Players had many chances to select a tin during the day, and in each tin a very special prize ranging from a bag of chips up to an entire box of Extreme Victory had been placed. The full box was more special than the bag of chips.

With 128 players, seven rounds will yield exactly one undefeated player, and for this tournament Brad S. was the one player. Brad won an entire box of Extreme Victory for his efforts. Did I mention this tournament was free? And yes I did say a full box of 24 packs! Everyone who entered also received a pack. Top 8 finishers received additional packs. The standings after seven rounds:

    1. Brad S. - Gladiator Beasts
    2. Austyn R. - Samurai
    3. Jacky H. - Water Synchro
    4. DJ K. T.G.
    5. Enoch S. - T.G.
    6. Nathan J. - T.G.
    7. Leo N. - Lightsworn
    8. Colby G. - Scraps

In the quarterfinals, Brad S. defeated Colby G, Austyn R. defeated Leo N in a lengthy, hard-fought match, Jacky H. eked out the narrowest of victories against Nathan J., and Enoch S. defeated DJ K.

In the semi-finals, Enoch S. defeated Brad S. and Jacky H. defeated Austyn R.

In the finals, Enoch S. defeated Jacky H. Have you ever seen a wee ladybug flitting about the top of a volcano when the volcano erupts with such fury that the landscape is altered for centuries? In such an eruption, the ladybug would be engulfed by tons of fiery, hot lava. Enoch was the volcano and Jacky was the ladybug.

For some reason I will never fully comprehend, Enoch S. has an irrepressible and insatiable urge to shake my hand. Of course, I do not want to shake his hand. I had a bet with him that if he took 1st or 2nd in this tournament I would shake his hand. He would pay me only 1 dolla if he didn't. Ugh he won. No, no, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Icky. Gross. Sick. Disgusting. Revolting. Repulsive. Ack phooey. But after shaking everyone else's hand, I put on a latex glove and offered my hand to Enoch. I am a man of my word, however, so i took off the glove and shook Enoch's hand. Immediately thereafter, I emptied most of what hand sanitizer I had left into my palm and cleansed as best I could.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this tournament. I felt sad I actually had to turn people away, but I didn't have more than 128 seats, and I didn't have time for an 8th round. Game Den's next big tournament is tentatively scheduled for October 29th. Stay tuned for more details about this tournament in the upcoming weeks.

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 7-23-2011

Another week has come and gone. Another Yu-gi=oh tournament at Game Den in West Valley City happened. This time, 48 very lovely players participated. After 6 rounds of Swiss pairings, these were the top 8 players:

    1. Jacky H. - Water Synchro

    2. Eddie R. - Hero Beat

    3. Anthony E. - T.G.

    4. Brett B. - Karakuri

    5. Jacob P. - Karakuri

    6. Chris Kawasaki L. - Dragunity

    7. Bright L. - X Sabers

    8. Anthony C. - Tengu Gadgets

Quarterfinal matchups saw Chris L. defeat Anthony E., Bright L. defeat Eddie R., Brett B. defeat Jacob P., and Anthony C. roll over Jacky H. like a freight train would roll over a bloated pollywog lying on the track under a scorching, midsummer sun.

Therefore, the top 3 seeds all lost in the first round of the top 8 playoff. Interesting

The semi-finals saw Bright L. defeat Chris L and Anthony C defeat Brett. B. The 8th seed, Anthony C. won the whole thing by defeating Bright L. in the finals.

Thank you to everybody who came to this tournament. Seeing those of you from Utah county at Game Den's Saturday tournament always makes me happy on the inside.

The free tournament is this coming Saturday, July 30th. Anyone of the first 128 players already on the list will get into the tournament by showing up by 11:30 on Saturday. At 11:30, the tournament will be opened to the other players on the list. People who signed up first will get priority. We will respect your prioritai! As of today, Monday, July 25th, 176 players have signed up. Many who have signed up will not show up, so if ye would like to play, call today to get on the list and at least have a chance of getting into this tournament.

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 7-16-2011

Game Den is the place for Yu-gi-oh in Utah. Even with many of the regulars in Pittsburgh for Nationals, 51 players showed up for the weekly Saturday tournament. Many voiced hopes of securing the first place prize. Only one managed to do so -- Baby! After the six rounds of Swiss pairings, the standings were thus:

    1. Steve N. - Tengu Plants
    2. Patrick S. - I Dunno.
    3. Cody C. - Gladiator Beasts
    4. Jacky H. - Gadgets
    5. Bright L aka 5 dolla! - X Sabers
    6. Kevin G. - Blackwings
    7. Daniel G. aka Baby - Gravekeepers
    8. Elliot C. - Agents

Quarter-Final action saw Steve N. eliminate Elliot C., Kevin G. defeat Cody C., Daniel G won because Patrick S. had to leave, and Bright L. tore up Jacky H. like a paper shredder tears up a tissue.

In the Semi-finals Daniel G. upset Steve N. and Bright L won Kevin G.

Daniel G. defeated Bright L in the finals

Game Den's application to hold Regionals for the Generation Force season has been denied by Konami. All of Game Den's faithful players need to let Konami know that Game Den is the best place for Regionals.

Remember Game Den's Big Free Yu-gi-oh tournament is only 2 weeks away. Call Game Den in WVC at 801 969-0074 or come by the store to sign up. Tournament will be limited to 128 players. Game Den intends to make this a special event for everyone involved. Trust you me. Do not miss this tournament!

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 7-9-2011

The planets aligned perfectly. Even the moons of Saturn were positioned perfectly foretelling an amazing happenstance. Jacky H was in first place after the six rounds of Swiss pairings! In spite of the environment across the hall in the little space, most players had a great time. A total of 50 personages signed up for this great event. After the 6 Swiss rounds, the standings:

    1. Jacky H. - Monarchs

    2. Jacob P. = Karakuri

    3. Philip H - Tengu Plants

    4. Christopher (middle name Sukiaki) L.

    5. Cody C. - Gladiator Beasts

    6. Kevin G. - Blackwings

    7. Joey C. - Tengu Plants

    8. Jordan V. - Agents

In the top 8 quarterfinals, Jordan V. crushed Jacky H as though a wee grape lying on the freeway was run over by a dump truck, Joey C. defeated Jacob P., Cody C. won Chris L, and Philip H outdueled Kevin G.

In the semifinals, Jordan V. defeated Philip H and Joey C. defeated Cody C.

And for the first time ever, Joey C. won a tournament at Game Den, by far the most prestigious tournament site, by winning Jordan V. in the finals.

And now an explanation about why Game Den hates the buying and selling of cards for cash in its stores. Game Den pays a great deal of money to the malls to have a store therein. Game Den does not like to compete with people selling cards when these people have paid no money. If you card sellers would like to pay my lease payment every month, then I might not get agitated when you sell cards, but the malls DO NOT ALLOW random people to sell stuff. Malls lease spaces to people to give them that right. It is strictly prohibited by my leases to allow anyone else to sell anything inside my store. Any questions? I hope not.

On a happier note, the BIG FREE TOURNAMENT draws ever nearer. As of today, 130 people have signed up. Of course, many of these people will not show up the day of the event, so get your name on the list by calling or coming to Game Den. Seating capacity will be 128.
