  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 12-10-11

Back by popular demand, yours truly is writing another Yu-gi-oh tournament report. With only one week left before Regionals, I feel it's important to let it be know that ummm yeah... it's one week before Regionals as in Regionals are this coming Saturday, December 17, at Game Den in West Valley City.

Now back to the tournament of this Saturday past. A robust 40 duelists enrolled and many rambunctious matches later, the following 8 players were left to engage in top 8 battles:

    1. Chris "Kawasaki" L. - Scraps
    2. Michael "Silent Assassin" T. - Agents
    3. Kyle "The Black Rose Sucked" W. - Vayu Turbo
    4. Enoch "Shake My Hand" S - Chaos
    5. Jordan "The Mathematician" V. Dino Rabbit
    6. Donovan "California Dreamin" S - Heroes
    7. Bright "Five Dolla!" L. - Junk Doppel
    8. Jacky "Forgot to Take My Ritalin" H. - POS Deck without a name

Quarterfinal action saw Forgot to Take My Ritalin squeak by Kawasaki in perhaps the greatest luck out of all time, Shake My Hand defeat The Mathematician, Five Dolla! upset the Silent Assassin, and The Black Rose Sucked overcome California Dreamin.

In the Semi-finals, Forgot to Take My Ritalin with the aid of unseen supernatural forces somehow barely won Shake My Hand, and The Black Rose Sucked defeated Five Dolla!

The Black Rose Sucked crushed Forgot to Take My Ritalin like an overripe banana in a trash compactor in the finals and won six packs for his efforts.

Registration for Regionals begins at 8:00 a.m. with the tournament scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Game Den in WVC will do its usual number of free giveaways during the tournament, so everyone will have a chance to win additional prizes. • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 10-15-2011

Before I begin the tournament report, let me take a moment to discuss the attributes of the pig. The curves of a pig are some of the most beautiful found in nature. The pig makes amazing oinking and grunting sounds that are pleasing to the human ear especially when compared with the constant high-pitched squealing of the little s***s in Kidzone. Pigs are exceptionally intelligent. Pigs can eat a lot of slop. I have nothing bad to say about pigs

Now about the tournament of this past Saturday. It was a splendid event with many jolly participants. After five rounds of fierce dueling, the following eight players advanced to fight for top honor:

    1. Joey "The friendly Ramen Noodle"C. - Agents
    2. DJ "The Hawaiian Chicken Leg" K. -Gravekeepers
    3. Anthony "19 Rares in a Row" E. - Chaos
    4. Anthony "Up All Night" C. - Gadgets
    5. Daniel "Baybee" G. - Gravekeepers
    6. Philip "Sink or Swim" H. - Vayu Turbo
    7. Cody "The Gavel" C. - Zombies
    8. Taylor "Worst Box Ever" B. - Scraps

Quarterfinal action saw The Friendly Ramen Noodle defeat Worst Box Ever, The Hawaiian Chicken Leg defeat The Gavel, Baybee defeat Up All Night, and 19 Rares in a Row defeat Sink or Swim.

Quarterfinal action ended with Baybee gnawing the Hawaiian Chicken Leg and The Friendly Ramen Noodle besting 19 Rares in a Row.

In the finals, The Friendly Ramen Noodle put Baybee to sleep.

Please remember how wonderful pigs are.

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament 9-10-11

Game Den has had many questions concerning Regionals. Game Den was not approved for Regonals by Konami for the Generation Force Regional Qualifier Season. Game Den deeply regrets this. Have fun sitting on the floor unless you choose to play in Game Den's tournament on October 29th. More details are soon to follow.

Now back to the task at hand - writing about last Saturday's tournament. Oh yes! What a superb tournament it was. After six rounds of hard-fought dueling, the following 8 emerged as el creamo de cropo:

    1. Anthony "19 Rares in a Row" E.
    2. Sampson "The Moneychanger" S.
    3. Juan "El gato de Mexico" O.
    4. Colby "The Razor" G.
    5. Kevin "Big Brother" G.
    6. Arman "Grabby Hands" F.
    7. Cody "The Gavel" C.
    8. Daniel "Baybee" G.

Many new players made for my thinking of many new nicknames. To receive an official, Game Den nickname, simply finish in the top 8 of a tournament for which I write a report.

In the top 8, Anthony E. defeated Daniel G., Sampson S. defeated Cody C., Arman F. defeated Juan O., and Kevin G. defeated Colby G. In the semifinals, Kevin G. defeated Anthony E. and Arman F. defeated Sampson S. Arman defeated Kevin in the finals to win the tournament.

FYI Jacky "Forgot to take my Ritalin" H. was thoroughly obliterated in several matches and did not make top 8.

  • Yu-gi-oh Tournament (the big free one) 7-30-2011

If you didn't enter this one, methinks you missed the best Yu-gi-oh tournament ever. Every seat was full -- all 128 of them. Players of all ability levels came from near and far to play for free and get prizes for free. Game Den's soon to be famous "Wall of Tins" was a big hit. Players had many chances to select a tin during the day, and in each tin a very special prize ranging from a bag of chips up to an entire box of Extreme Victory had been placed. The full box was more special than the bag of chips.

With 128 players, seven rounds will yield exactly one undefeated player, and for this tournament Brad S. was the one player. Brad won an entire box of Extreme Victory for his efforts. Did I mention this tournament was free? And yes I did say a full box of 24 packs! Everyone who entered also received a pack. Top 8 finishers received additional packs. The standings after seven rounds:

    1. Brad S. - Gladiator Beasts
    2. Austyn R. - Samurai
    3. Jacky H. - Water Synchro
    4. DJ K. T.G.
    5. Enoch S. - T.G.
    6. Nathan J. - T.G.
    7. Leo N. - Lightsworn
    8. Colby G. - Scraps

In the quarterfinals, Brad S. defeated Colby G, Austyn R. defeated Leo N in a lengthy, hard-fought match, Jacky H. eked out the narrowest of victories against Nathan J., and Enoch S. defeated DJ K.

In the semi-finals, Enoch S. defeated Brad S. and Jacky H. defeated Austyn R.

In the finals, Enoch S. defeated Jacky H. Have you ever seen a wee ladybug flitting about the top of a volcano when the volcano erupts with such fury that the landscape is altered for centuries? In such an eruption, the ladybug would be engulfed by tons of fiery, hot lava. Enoch was the volcano and Jacky was the ladybug.

For some reason I will never fully comprehend, Enoch S. has an irrepressible and insatiable urge to shake my hand. Of course, I do not want to shake his hand. I had a bet with him that if he took 1st or 2nd in this tournament I would shake his hand. He would pay me only 1 dolla if he didn't. Ugh he won. No, no, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Icky. Gross. Sick. Disgusting. Revolting. Repulsive. Ack phooey. But after shaking everyone else's hand, I put on a latex glove and offered my hand to Enoch. I am a man of my word, however, so i took off the glove and shook Enoch's hand. Immediately thereafter, I emptied most of what hand sanitizer I had left into my palm and cleansed as best I could.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this tournament. I felt sad I actually had to turn people away, but I didn't have more than 128 seats, and I didn't have time for an 8th round. Game Den's next big tournament is tentatively scheduled for October 29th. Stay tuned for more details about this tournament in the upcoming weeks.

  • Odds of getting mythic rares in sealed events

Due to the inordinately large amount of mythic rares that showed up in decks at the Sunday MTG pre-release event, I decided to post the odds of pulling mythic rares in 6 packs. If you disagree, with the math, feel free to chime in.

Here are the odds of getting a certain number of mythic rares in six packs:

    0 mythic rares: (7/8)^6 = 45% or a little less than 1 in 2

    1 mythic rare: 1/8 * (7/8)^5 * 6 = 38% or a little more than 1 in 3

    2 mythic rares: (1/8)^2 * (7/8)^4 * 15 = 14% or about 1 in 7

    3 mythic rares: (1/8)^3 * (7/8)^3 * 20 = 2.6% or about 1 in 38

    4 mythic rares: (1/8)^4 * (7/8)^2 * 15 = 0.28% or about 1 in 357

    5 mythic rares: (1/8)^5 * (7/8) * 6 = 0.016% or about 1 in 6250

    6 mythic rares: (1/8)^6 = 0.00038% or about 1 in 263158

The odds of 3 mythic rares having at least two that are the same color:

    1 – (4/5 * 3/5) = 52%

Combine that with the odds of getting exactly 3 mythic rares:

2.6% * 52% = 1.4% (or 1 in 73 chance) Yes, somebody had 3 mythic rares and 2 of them were the same color. Others had 2 mythic rares. Only 14 people were in the tournament.

Be it far from me to accuse anybody of sneaking extra mythics into a pre-release sealed deck. but in the future, at Sunday pre-releases and at release events, expect a deck checklist fill-out, followed by a swithching of decks, followed by a deck registration before playing.
